Font Research

The font can be very important n the impact of the titles and credits, for example if we put a girly bubbly font on our title people may doubt our films potential to be scary.

font examples

Something in the way- Stencil std

Something in the way- castellar
Something in the way- smoke in the woods
Something in the way- Red rocket

Film Logo Research

 20th Century Fox.
since 1935.
This is a well known production company logo. Its associated with some of the most successful films such as, Avatar, star wars and alien.
The colours used in this logo are all relatively neutral. The main subject is in gold, the colour gold shows wealth. Therefore making the audience feel that the film company are superior.

Dreamworks
since 1994
This isnt as established as some other film company's but has still produced some wide known films such as Shrek. The colours are bold and bright making the font and font colour stand out from the background.Dreamworks are to thank for a great deal of animation films so the colours used in the logo give a friendly child like feel.

Paramount Pictures
since 1912
This is the oldest surviving hollywood logo. They are responsible for such films as, shutter island and jackass. The colours are quite blended but the font colour still stands out.

Micro Leading To Macro

The micro elements in our production all help to add up to to the macro for example the micro elements i.e lighting and the sound all help to create suspense a macro element. All the micro elements help in our production to set the mood of a horror film. Therefore the micro elements are important in our film to help it to be a successful horror film fitting all the criteria

Props And Costumes

Props and costumes

The props and costumes we have decided to use are:

Props:

  • A simple and effective weapon for Dave Nickles to use, its a realistic prop to use as its easy to access.

  • The kettle is a prop focused on as one of the shots shows the young woman making a cup of tea showing her living her normal everyday life before it gets disturbed.

  • We will be using a floor of scattered images for the first thirty seconds with the womans face scratched out, this creates a sense of enigma as the viewer would be wanting to know why her face has been erased from the image.

Costumes:

  • The killer is wearing dark clothes this is a connotation that the man is going to do something wrong, he is identified within the first 10 seconds of action. The dark clothes will be simple giving him no individuality as he is a dark character wanting to blend into the background.

  • The woman is wearing normal everyday clothes to make her look innocent. The clothes are a connotation that she is not bad so the good and bad in the film is already been established. The normal preferably brighter clothes means she does ave individuality and straight away becomes a a more likeable character.

Tonights Progress

Tonight we filmed the establishing shot of sophies house in which the film opening will take place. This proved slightly difficult as cars and different kept going past which could make the editing harder as the sounds may not link together. We shot the house from various angles but settled for one that was straight on.

Storyboard

Our storyboard for the 2 minute film opening:

In this section we will use an aerial shot to scan over the pictures and make it look as though somebody is looking down on them. There will be narrating over the pictures of the two main characters in a lovers chat.

There is a close up on these pictures to show emphasis on the scratched out womans faces.

The narration here is repeated as the girlfriend and boyfriend are mid conversation.

The camera then fades out to a point of view shot on the house that the woman lives in. There will be higher pitched slow music to create a certain scary tone.

There will be diagetic sounds on the kettle boiling. and a mid shot will be used to show the woman making cups of tea.

There will be a close up on the mans hand to create enigma as questions are asked about whos hand is it.

The camera will then go to a wide angle shot, to show that the woman has opened the door to the house. The music will still be spooky sounding.

The womans mouth will be shown smiling, the music then will cut as the shot turns to the angry mans mouth.

The camera will go to a low angle on the woman falling with blood on her face, the diagetic banging sound will kick in as she falls in front of the camera.

The camera will then show the woman waking up after being knocked out, this will be a point of view shot, and the music will be muffled and the breathing will be heavy to emphasise fear.

The womans face will be shown a close up and she looks to her left and see's dead people in the corner then as she looks the camera goes to another point of view shot. As the woman begins to move the sound gets louder.

The camera will then show the woman crawling into the corner and the music will still be eerie and it will show the fear on the woman's face. Then the camera moves around and the door opens and we hear the sound of it opening and then it fades to black.

We did have two more but we have decided to remove those for effect, here they are:

The man walks in it shows a long shot and the music is eerie.

Then she screams and the man walks down the stairs and the woman says why are you doing this to me.

Film Titles/ Credits - The Shining

We looked at some film openings to get an idea of the order in which the titles and credits come. The first film we looked at was a horror (like our own), The Shining.

The order in which the credits come in are;
The director
Two main actors
Name of film
Featuring

The main actors are put towards the beginning of this order as they are the ones who are most likely to be well known and make people interested in watching the film.

Film Title/Credits - Psycho 1960 Intro

Another film opening i looked at was Psycho, the order in which the credits appeared was different.

Director
Film Name
Three Main Actors
Co-Starring

The film name may be second on list here as the title may leave enigma as to what the film will be about, it will leave you thinking whilst the other credits are rolling.

Job Roles In Films

The film producers,
  • decide which projects to produce, or creating programme ideas themselves
  • reading scripts
  • raising finance for projects
  • assessing what resources will be needed
  • planning the schedule
  • hiring all the necessary technical resources and support services
  • recruiting key production staff and crew
  • editing scripts
  • managing cash flow
  • making sure that the entire production stays on schedule and within budget.
In our film Will is the producer as he is well organsied and very motivated to succeed in this subject, he is most likely to make a reliable producer.

The Directors
  • Visualise the script and turn it into a movie.
  • They are in charge of all the creative scenes.
Camera Operator
  • Choose suitable camera lenses
  • They must be creative
  • assembling, preparing and setting up equipment prior to filming
  • offering advice on how best to shoot a scene, explaining the visual impact created by particular shots
In our group I am in charge of the camera work as I did well using the camera and operating it in the preliminary task.

Sound Operator
  • assembling and operating the necessary equipment
  • recording sound onto digital audio tape or hard disk recorders
  • maintaining and repairing sound equipment.
Sophie is the sound operator as she has good knowledge of music and will choose suitable backing music for our film opening.

BBFC - How I would classify our film

BBFC

The BBFC are the 'British board of film clasification' who are an independant, non- governmental body funded through the fees it charges to those who submit films and video through clasification.

What do the BBFC take ito consideration?
  • Discrimination against sex and race
  • Drug abuse
  • Horror
  • Imitable behaviour
  • Language
  • Nudity
  • Sex
  • Theme
  • Violence
Key to all decisions is the context these things are presented in. So graphic violence which is glamorised will be classified much stricter than fairly light violence which is presented in a  comical or negative manner.

Some examples that the BBFC have banned in the uk because they are of a worse standard of 18.
  • Human centipeed 2 the full sequence.
  • Grotesc because it had to much level of sexual tortue.

This is an example of the 18 symbol the BBFC would have on the film ratings.

We have classified our film as an 18 as it contains hints of torture and strong violence. It contains strong sadistic or sexual violence meaning we could not give it the certificate 15.
